About Project Natal

Project Natal is the code name for Microsofts latest Xbox 360 development. It allows users to interact with their Xbox without a controller - instead they will use their body and voice to send instructions to the box. This is accomplished through a TV-mounted camera/microphone bar which picks up your movement and body in 3d - you can even scan inanimate objects and use them on your Xbox!

This allows the Xbox to seriously challenge the Nintendo Wii - where the users can sit in their sofa and waggle the controller around and still achieve the same results as if they were playing the games ‘as intended’. The techonogly will allow for a variety of new game developments - where your own skill can actually make a difference. For example, if you were to play a fighting game you would use your own moves rather than a sequence of button pushes (or in the case of the Wii, wiggling a controller one way or the other..). The same goes for dance games, etc, etc.

Well, thats the theory anyway. Since there is not a lot of information available about the technology as of yet it is hard to say just how well it will actually function. The demo’s released so far have looked impressive, though, and I much look forward to seeing it all unfold.
